The Boat

While the ancients built arks of massive timber to weather the flood, why are we left to cobble together a scarred vessel out of scorched, exhausted industrial debris? Where can such a ship possibly sail?

Kang Wang is a multidisciplinary artist born in China, currently based in New York City. She earned her Master of Architecture from the Pratt Institute, where her research focused on the spatial politics of immigrant communities and the material culture of urban survival. Her practice moves between installation, mixed-media assemblage, and participatory fieldwork, with a persistent interest in how discarded objects carry the thermodynamic and emotional residue of the lives they've passed through.

Wang works at a boutique architecture and design firm in New York City, where her professional engagement with built space informs her artistic inquiry into the forces — social, political, climatic — that shape material environments. Outside the studio, she is a marathon runner and boulderer, practices that she describes as continuous negotiations between body, terrain, and endurance.
